Faltbares Opernglas mit Kompass

Hier handelt es sich um ein seit dem 19. Jh. in verschiedenen Versionen, auch als Spielzueg, hergestelltes Beobachtungsglas nach Galileischem Prinzip, aber ohne jegliches Gehäuse.
Die beiden benötigten Linsen sind an einem Blechstab befestigt und können an diesen flach zusammengeklappt werden. Eine Fokussierung ist durch Verschieben der Okularlinse möglich. Die Vergrößerung liegt ca. bei 2fach. Am Objektivende des Stabes ist ein Kompass eingefasst, der die Größe der Objektivlinse hat, so dass sie beim Zusammenklappen auf ihm liegt.

Foldable Spyglass with Compass

Here you have a monocular version of a Galileian spy glass without any housing. This type of glass was and still is manufactured since the 19th century in binocular or monocular versions as a orientating instrument for scouts or hikers or as a toy.
The two lenses are fixed on joints to a tin rod, and thus can be folded down flat to it. Focussing can be done by moving the ocular lens ring back and forth. The magnification is about 2 times. At the objective end of the rod, a compass is framed in a tin ring. The compass is of the objective lens's size so that the lens lies exactly on it when folded down.

Möglicherweise sollte das Glas für Orientierungsläufe im Gelände verwendet werden (Pfadfinder, Wanderer). Der Durchmesser des Kompasses und der Objektivlinse ist ca. 5cm, die Länge schätzungsweise ca. 12cm. Es wiegt 40g.

The spyglass was probably inteded to be used for scouting and hiking. The compass' and objective frame diameter is ca. 5cm (1.83 in.), length is about 12cm assumingly. It weighs 40g.
