Lunette-Hofmann bi-prismatique sans tirage

Neben dem Porro-1-Monokular von J.G. Hofmann gibt es ein größeres Prismentleskop mit Porro-1-System von Hofmann, das "Lunette-Hofmann bi-prismatique sans tirage" (= Hofmann-Fernrohr mit zwei Prismen ohne Auszug). Es hat einen Leder ummantelten langen Objektivtubus mit einer ausziehbaren Sonnenblende und Schutzkappe sowie einem seitlich versetzen mit Leder ummantelten Prismentubus mit dem innenliegenden Prismenstuhl. Das Okular ist ein herausziehbares Steckokular wie bei astronomischen Fernrohren. Das Exemplar im Deutschen Museum hat außerdem ein Tischstativ. Das besagte Modell ist am oberen Deckel des runden Prismengehäuses mit Nr. 67 sowie mit "J.G. Hofmann Paris" in einem Oval gekennzeichnet. Ein weitere Exemplar trägt nur die Seriennummer "33" an dieser Stelle. Auf dem oberen Deckel des Objektivtubusses ist die Modellbezeichnung "LUNETTE-HOFMANN bi-prismatique sans tirage" und "BREVETÉE S.G.D.G." („Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement“ = „Patent ohne Garantie der Regierung“) eingraviert. Beim zweiten Exemplar steht dort auch in einer Antiqua-Schrift die Firmenadresse "J. G. Hofmann, Rue de Buci 3, à Paris". Von einem dritten Exemplar ist bekannt, dass es einen Lederköcher hat, jedoch nicht die Seriennummer Das Fernrohr ist aus schwarz lackiertem Messing, soweit nicht Farbe oder Leder abgeplatzt sind. Das Fernrohr hat im Grunde einen einfachen Aufbau, wie die demontierten Teile im Foto zeigen. Das Instrument dürfte zwischen 1860 und Anfang der 1870er gebaut worden sein.

Besides the Porro 1 Monocular by J.G. Hofmann there is a bigger prism telescope with a Porro 1 system made by Hofmann, the "Lunette-Hofmann bi-prismatique sans tirage" (= Hofmann telescope with two prisms without a draw). It has a leather covered long objective tube with an extendable sunshade and a protection cap as well as a off-set leatehr covered prism cylindrical housing containing the prism chair. The eyepiece is a slip-in ocular like for astronomical telesocpes. The modle in the Deutsche Museum also comes with a table stand. This model is marked on the top cover of the prism housing with number 67 and with "J.G. Hofmann Paris" in an oval outline. Another model is only marked with the serial number "33" there. On the top cover of the objective tube the model name "LUNETTE-HOFMANN bi-prismatique sans tirage" as well as "BREVETÉE S.G.D.G." („Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement“ = „Patent without Guarantee of the Government") is engraved. The second specimen also bears the company's address "J. G. Hofmann, Rue de Buci 3, à Paris" in that place, writtenin an Antiqua font. A third known specimen is supplied with a leather case; otherinformation is missing. The telesocpe was made of black painted brass, unless paint or leather have peeled off. The telescope has basically a simple construction as the picture with the disassembled parts shwo. The instrument must have been made between 1860 and the beginning of the 1870s .

Das Lunette-Hofmann hat eine 50mm nicht-zementierte achromatische Objektiv-Linse. Da die Austrittspupille 2mm ist, lässt sich die Vergrößerung auf 25fach bestimmen (im Buch "Fernrohre und ihre Meister" von Riekher wird das Modell aus dem Dt. Museum als ein 20x40 Modell beschrieben). Die Schutzkappe ist am breiteren Rand 67mm, die 91mm lange Sonnenblende ist 68mm (am geriffelten Rand 69mm), der blanke Endtubus 61mm, der 164mm lange belederte Objektivtubus 59mm und dessen Übergangsstück zum Deckel 64mm im Durchmesser. Der Deckelwulst ist 71mm, das Prismengehäuse 47mm und das Okularstück 24mm im Dutchmesser. Das Steckokular ist 21mm bzw. am geriffelten Augnemuschelrand 26mm im Durchmesser. Das Fernrohr ist 370 bis ca. 390mm lang und mit ausgezogener Sonnenblende 65mm länger. Das Prismenfernrohr wiegt 920g mit der Schutzkappe.

The Lunette-Hofmann has a 50mm uncemented achromatic objective lens. As the exit pupil is 2mm, the magnification can be calculated as being 25 times (in the book "Fernrohre und ihre Meister" by Riekher the mdoel in the Dt. Museum is described as a 20x40 model). The protection cap measures 67mm at its widest rim, the 91mm long sunshade is 68mm (69mm at its knurled rim), the polished straight end piece 61mm, the 164mm long leather covered objective tube 59mm, and its intermediate part before the cover plate is 64mm in diameter. The bulging rim is 71mm, the prism housing is 47mm, and the eyepeice is 24mm in diameter. The slip-in ocular is 21mm or 26mm at its knurled eyecup in diameter. The telesocpe is 370 to c. 390mm long and 65mm longer when the sunshade is fully extended. The prism telescope weighs 920g with its protection cap.

Beim Modell Nr. 33 ist auf der Innenseite der Schutzkappe eine handshcriftlöiche Gravur, die vermutlich die Initialien eines Besitzers wiedergeben, aber ncith so recht entzifferbar sind - evtl. HKK... (?); ebenso ist der matte Glasrand der Objektivlinse handschriftlich gekennzeichnet, wobei dort lediglich "JGH" deutbar ist.

Concerning the model No. 33 the inside of the cap has a handwritten engraving which probablyare the initals of an owner: maybe "HKK..." (?). Moreover, the matte rim of the objective lens is also engraved with some handwritten markings. At least the letters "JGH" are readable there.
