Lawrence & Mayo 12x20 Monocular

Das 12x20 Monokular wurde von der Optikerfirma "Lawrence & Mayo" vertrieben. Dies lässt sich anhand der Inschrift im Deckel des passenden Lederköchers sowie der gleichen ungewöhnlichen Bauart mit einer schwarz lackierten Blechummantelung mit einer Leder imitierenden Struktur wie beim 8x20 Modell der Firma erschließen. Der dreifach verschraubte obere Deckel selbst hat keine Gravur. Beim 12x20 ist die Originalaugenmuschel noch vorhanden. Sie ist eine 3/3 Hartgummiversion mit der Kennzeichnung '12x' und einem verdickten kreuzgeriffelten Fokussierungsteil (++). Am Gehäuse ist ein kurzer Messingstreifen mit Trageriemenöse doppelt angeschraubt. Die Form und Bauweise der Augenmuschel und des Gehäuses sprechen dafür, dass es sich um eine Anfertigung von E. Busch Rathenow für Lawrence & Mayo handelt. Es ist bis auf die Ummantelung identisch mit den frühen (Anfang 20. Jh.) Busch (Lynkop-)Monokularen (s. Vergleichsbilder).

The 12x20 monocular was distributed by the optician's firm "Lawrence & Mayo." This can be deduced from the inscription on the lid of the matching leather case as well as the similar unusual design with a black lacquered sheet metal casing featuring a leather-like texture, as seen on the company's 8x20 model. The top cover itself having three screws comes without any markings. The original eyecup is still present on the 12x20. It is a 3/3 hard rubber version marked '12x' and has a thickened, cross-ribbed focusing element (++). A short brass strip with a carrying strap eyelet is attached to the housing with two screws. The shape and construction of the eyecup and housing suggest that it was manufactured by E. Busch Rathenow for Lawrence & Mayo. Except for the casing, it is identical to the early (beginning of 20th century) Busch (Lynkop) monoculars (see comparison images).

The 8x20 monocular weighs 183g. It is 110-112mm long, and is 55x55mm wide at its body. The eyepiece is 21mm, the focusing part 29mm and the eyecup 35mm in diameter.
