This flat sized monocular model "Cyclops 8x" was made by "La Filotecnica" in Milano, an optical instrument factory run by Porro's collaborator Salmoiraghi. There are also the words "Monocolo brevettato" on the brass label, which means "patented monocular". A precise dating is not possible. But the use of an aluminium body hints to a production after 1900, when aluminium became more common and affordable. It is listed in a Filotecnica catalogue, and an explanation says that it is a copy of the early "Lunette Napoléon III" by I. Porro. Unfortunately the catalogue is undated, but the larger range of prism binoculars offered, and their design of the other bincoulars offered rather hints to a productio ndat in the 1930s (this would be the 75th anniversary of the Porro's "Lunette Napoléon III" (1855-1930). The "Cyclops" has a porro II prism system with a focussing eye-piece (s. pics of the opened monocular). The field of view is 98m, the monocular weighs 250g. The design re-appears again with the later "Minox T8". ![]() |
