Aitchison 8x "The Imperial"

Dieses 8x Monokular hat eine schlanke Bauform mit einem nierenförmigen Querschnitt des Gehäuses, das ein Porro-2-Prismensystem beinhaltet. Das Gehäuse ist aus Aluminium, oben bis auf einen Okularstutzen geschlossen und wird lediglich von einem Messingdeckel abgedeckt. Nach Abschrauben des Objektivtubus lässt sich der untere Deckel abnehmen und es werden 3 Schrauben sichtbar. Durch Lösen dieser kann die Grundplatte, auf dem das Porro-2-Prismensystem befestigt ist, herausgezogen werden. Dies ermöglicht eine einfache Reinigung oder Justierung. Die ganze Bauart und -form sieht nach einem Schütz-Glass aus und dürfte eine Fertigung für Aitchison oder deren Lizenzferrtigung gewesen sein; das Prismen-Logo auf dem oberen Deckel entspricht auch dem Schütz Logo und nicht damaligen Aitchison Kennzeichnungen. Im Logo befindet sich die Vergrößerungsangabe "8x" und darunter die Produktions- oder seriennummer "Nr. 30354" – man beachte auch hier die Abkürzung für Nummer in deutscher Art als "Nr." und nicht englisch als "No." An den Prismendächern des Logos steht "Aitchison" und "London", an der Basis "The Imperial". Für das gesagte spricht auch ein weiteres Exemplar mit Seriennummer 30220, welches mit "German" statt mit "The Imperial" beschriftet ist.

This 8x monocular has a slender housing with a kidney-shaped base, which contains a porro 2 system. The body is made of aluminium, and is closed at its top apart from an ocular barrel. The top is covered with a brass plate with some markings. When unscrewing the objective cover plate you can see three screws that hold the prism mounting rack inside. It can be pulled out easily for cleaning or adjusting the prisms. The whole design and construction looks like a porro 2 glass by Schuetz Cassel, and might just be a licence production by Aitchison or a make for Aitchison. Moreover, the prism logo at the top cover plate is the same as the Schütz logo of the 1920s and 30s. The magnification '8x' is given within the logo, below the serial or production number "Nr. 30354" – notice that the abbreviation for number is the German "Nr.", not the English "No.". "Aitchison" and "London" is inscribed along the prism sides of the logo, the base being marked with the model name "The Imperial". Another proof for the notes above comes with another 8x model (S/N 30220) that is marked with "German" instead of "The Imperial".

Das Monokular hat eine unvergütete Optik; die Objektivlinse hat einen Durchmesser von 25mm. Das Glas stammt aus der Zeit um den 1. Weltkrieg. Das Gehäuse ist mit Leder ummantelt und hat eine eingegossene Trageriemenöse. Das linksseitige Okular hat eine Dioptireneinteilung von plus bis minus sieben mit Kennzeichnungen bei +/-5 und 0. Als Besonderheit ist an der Skala eine "5" falsch bei +3 Dioptrien eingraviert und wurde wieder durchgestrichen. Die Drehhülse zum Fokussieren hat einen Führungsschlitz, der freiliegt, da der abdeckende Teil der 2/3 Bakelit-Augenmuschel fehlt und nur noch der obere Teil vorhanden ist oder eine einfache Augenmuschel angeklebt wurde (s. Foto).

The optics are uncoated. The objective lens has a diameter of 25mm. The glass must date from about World War I. The body is covered with leather and has a cast-in strap lug. The left-hand sided ocular has a dioptre adjustment ranging from plus to minus seven, being marked at +5, -5 and zero. An unusual fact is that at the +3 dioptre line a "5" was engraved falsely and struck out. A diagonal slit in the ocular tube for focusing leads the focusing movement. This slit can be seen, because the original covering part of the 2/3 Bakelite eyecup is missing. Only the upper part is still in place or a simple 173 eyecup was glued to the end (see photo)

Das Monokular ist 126 bis 131mm lang, das 66mm lange Gehäuse ist oben 36x43mm und unten 37x46mm breit. Der Objektivtubus ist 23mm lang und 31mm im Durchmesser. Der Okularsockel ist 34mm, das schmale Okularstück 20,2mm, der Dioptrienring 20,6mm und die Augenmuschel 33mm im Durchmesser. Das Glas wiegt 192g.

The monocular measures 126 to 131mm in length. The 66mm all housing is 36x43mm wide at its top and 37x46mm wide at its bottom. The objective tube is 23mm in length and 31mm in diameter. The ocular base is 34mm, the narrow ocular tube 20.2mm, the dioptre ring 20.6mm, and the eyecup 33mm in diameter. The glass weighs 192g.
