Aitchison 12x36

Jh.
This monocular is a 12x36 porro I prism glass. It was made by "Aitchison & Co. Makers London & Leeds". Besides the producer's name, the black top cover is marked "x12". The monocular is made of aluminium with leather coverings. According to Seeger ("Feldstecher ...", p. 69) the binocular version had a hard rubber top cover, so that this may apply to the monocular as well. The monocular has an iris shutter behind the objective – you can see a knurled ring between the conical tube and the objective tube which adjusts it (cf. Aitchison 9x36). The bottom cover is engraved with serial number 316 an incomplete "broad arrow" showing that the glass had been tested but not accepted for military use. Another 12x36 model with serial number 310 has the following cover inscription: "x12 PROTECTED BY AITCHISON'S PATENTS".
The strap lug is attached to a screwed-on metal strip. The eye-cup is made of hard rubber as well. The dioptre adjustment ranges from + to - 5 with a scale all around the ocular. The monocular dates from the beginning of the 20th century.
