Wollensak Azimuth Telescope Mark V Model 1

Navy - BU. of Ord. Azimuth Telescope Mark V Mod. 1, Inspector HTM, No. 410, MADE BY Wollensak Optical Company, Rochester, N.Y. USA 1941". Navy BU Ships - AZIMUTH TELESCOPE MARK V MOD 1, Ser. No. 410, 1940, Wollensak Optical Co.".
This azimuthal telescope with all of its accessories is stored in a grey painted wooden box. The "Bureaus of Ordnance" (BU of Ord.) markings are on a small tin plate attached to the front of the box: "U.S. Navy - BU. of Ord. Azimuth Telescope Mark V Mod. 1, Inspector HTM, No. 410, MADE BY Wollensak Optical Company, Rochester, N.Y. USA 1941". Hence, it can be dated from 1941 as a Navy Telescope. There also is an inscription in golden-yellow letters at the objective side of the telescope: "U.S. Navy BU Ships - AZIMUTH TELESCOPE MARK V MOD 1, Ser. No. 410, 1940, Wollensak Optical Co.". So the date given hints at some earlier production of the glass itself; yet the scope and the box belong to one set (S/N 410).
All telescope parts, such as the detachable sun filters, the metal caps, and the lighting unit have their own part list numbers. The telescope itself has part number "181905-F-6".

The housing is made of metal lacquered with some anthracite paint. The ocular has a plastic eyecup and a dioptre adjustment ranging from +2 to -4. The focusing system has linear movement. The ocular also has cross-hairs for targetting.
There are two trunnions at the sides that were used to mount the scope on some swivel tripod. A notch and bead device is attached to the top of the housing. At the top right side there is a rail to mount the lighting unit which consists of a carrier and a bulb holder with a battery cable socket.

The telescope has a Porro 1 prism system with magenta coated (light violet) optics. Having an exit pupil of 6mm and a 36mm objective lens, the magnification is 6 times. The scope with lighting unit weighs 1772g. It is 17cm long, the housing measures 111x84x57, and the diameter of the objective frame is 54mm. The ocular is 34mm, the eyecup 37mm in diameter. The rods at the flanks protrude 13mm and 20mm.
The carrying box measures 28x16x15cm. The additional filter lenses are dark green and dark greyish-black. The other small round container at the inside of the cover (one is not screwed to the cover any more) may have once held ocular filter lenses.
