Military Pocket Telescope

This pocket telescope, 8cm tall and weighing 84g, is made of brass with black lacquering partly still existing. There is no maker's name, but an engraving with "HIGH" as well as to feathered arrows and a crow's foot ("broad arrows"), both being signs for British military glasses. Maybe this was a sort of a gun sight. There is a leathered cardboard cap to cover the objective.

Having an exit pupil of about 3mm and an objective diameter of 18mm the magnification must be about 6 times. The diameter at its objective end is 24mm, at the main tube 20mm; the ocuara piece measures 16mm, and the eye-cup 31mm. The latter is made of leather which is a striking feature of the telescope. focussing is done by turning the ocular, whereas the eyepiece can be pulled out completely. Near focus is about 40cm.
