J. Lizars 8x30

This 8x30 monocular by "J. Lizars", a distributor and maker of cameras and optical goods in Glasgow and later Edingburgh (s. its history at www.edinphoto.org.uk/pd/pd_lizars_background.htm) shows signs of use. The (fake) leather covering is missing, teh ocular is stuck and the thread to screw it into the housing is worn off. The previous owner and seller of this monocular wrote to me: "I took it with me when we recaptured the Suez Canal in 1956 and it saw service in Cyprus, Malaysia and N Ireland". So, this glass has gone to some rough treatment.

As there is no coating to the optics, I think, this brass and alloy monocular was already made before WWII. It looks much like a French made piece and might have its origin there .
There are some features that are the same: the left-hand side aluminium ocular has a plastic eye-cup which comprises the milled ring for a better grip, a screw that holds the ocular fixed at the rim side of the top cover, and a round curved strap lug cast in the body. The top cover is marked by or for "J. Lizars" with their name, the firm's residental towns and "8x30". The objective diameter in fact is only 27.5mm, however the 8times magnification is right, calculating 3.5mm exit pupil and objective diameter.

Lizars OPTICIAN & PHOTGRAPHICALDEALER 101-107 Buchanan St, Glasgow" beschriftet

Das Monokular wiegt 209g. Es ist 10,5cm lang und das Gehäuse 43x43mm bzw. unte 46x46mm breit.

The original leather case is inscribed with "J. Lizars OPTICIAN & PHOTGRAPHICALDEALER 101-107 Buchanan St, Glasgow" at the inside of its lid.

The monocular weighs 209g. It is 105mm in length and 43x43mm at its top or 46x46mm at its bottom of the housing.
