Carl Zeiss 5x + 10x 24 Simpmarine

This is a very interesting and old (betw. 1896 and 1904) Zeiss prism monocular with changeable magnification. By turning the bended, bowl shaped ocular turret – screwed to the top – a 5 times or a 10 times magnification can be achieved. The 2/3 eyecups are made of some sort of ebonite. The turret has a sort of click stop with a key and slot system. Both oculars have a dioptre adjustment with markings running around the whole dioptre ring. The 5x ocular is marked at zero and five, wheras the 10x ocular is also marked at ten. The body is leather covered and has a 6cm long strap lug screwed on. All brass parts are lacquered black. The round bottom cover has got three screws.
The Navy Glass "Simpmarine" is inscribed with the handscript logo and specifications "Vergr.= 5 & 10" used for the models before 1904. Its serial number is 157, being engraved at the centre pivot of the revolver cover plate - another model has got serial number 83 (pic 6, yellow arrow).

Depending on dioptre adjustment and choice of ocular the monocula is 128-138mm or 125-135mm tall. The housing measures 6cm in height at one side, and 7.1cm in height at the taller side. The housing's diameter is 63mm at its top and 70mm at its bottom. The objective lens is 24mm, the objective frame 30mm in diameter. The lens is recessed by 15mm into the frame or body functioning as a rayshade. Theupper brass ring at the housing is ca. 5mm wide. Two screws attache the spring key (21mm long) to this ring. The ocular turret also bends upwards 5mm. The 5x ocular is 35-45mm long and 23mm in diameter. The 10x ocular is 25-30mm long and 25mm in diameter, too. The eyecups of both oculars are 39mm and their focusing part 29mm in diameter. The Simpmarine weighs 517g.
